Mind-bending movies have always been a discussion among hardcore movie fans. From Fight Club to Inception, I’ve watched many intriguing movies/TV shows with my friends. However, we’ve rarely concluded one on mutual grounds. And I guess this is why they’re mind-twisting movies/TV shows.
Anyway, if you’re tired of watching the same old movies where a hero saves the world, you’ve come to the right place. The streaming giant Netflix has a few psychological thrillers that not many people know about. But, they’re worth your time and here, I’ll give you a brief review of what to expect from these suspense-filled thrillers.
Also, such cinematic work deserves to be watched uninterrupted. So, if you have spotty internet, be sure to fix it first. For recommendations, you can look into Xfinity internet packages, as Xfinity streams movies/TV shows in HD for me like a breeze. Now, let’s start:
Behind Her Eyes
Louise – a hardworking single mother develops a bond with her boss – David. But at the same time, she befriends his wife – Adele. A perfect love triangle, right?
Well, almost perfect if we take out all the twists and turns and the tangled web of secrets that unfolds later in this mini-series. Also, I can only tell you this much because if I do, it’ll ruin all the fun.
Black Mirror
Black Mirror is an anthology series; you can start from any episode and you will come across a different story in each episode.
With the central theme focused on technology in a dystopian future, Black Mirror has made a lot of my friends question every technology around them. You may draw a different conclusion, but I do not believe technology is evil at all. It’s the humans who’re in control of technology and it’s our choice to use it for good or bad.
Anyways, mind-benders are always open for interpretation and let’s see what conclusion you draw after watching the Black Mirror.
Brand New Cherry Flavor
The story starts when an aspiring filmmaker – Lisa Nova, arrives in Hollywood with the dream of directing her first movie. Soon enough, when she thought of realizing her dream, she had an unforgettably bad experience with a predatory producer. To seek revenge, Lisa turned to a witch, and from then on here, this show becomes a rollercoaster ride.
Just keep your eyes and mind open and don’t get frightened when kittens ooze out from someone’s mouth. Because that won’t be the wildest image you’ll see in this show.
Dark
Arguably, one of the most confusing shows I’ve seen till now. The story starts when a young boy goes missing from a rural town. The search to find him starts and that is when various creepy, mysterious, and confusing events take place.
A wormhole that opens near a nuclear plant, conspiracies by local families, and time travel. Now, you may say “Time Travel?”. Yes, and to understand why this show is a real brain twister, start watching it today!
I’m Thinking of Ending Things
It’s one of those movies that you watch twice, and both times, come to a different conclusion. On the surface, it’s a simple story of a girl who goes to meet her boyfriend’s parents on a snowy day. The harsh weather seems the only trouble, but wait for the story to unfold.
A little advice: focus on the dialogues and the word “treacherous”. Otherwise, you may watch this movie again to understand what happened.
Maniac
Two New Yorkers – Annie and Owen meet as they both sign up for a pharmaceutical trial. In three days, both are given a set of drugs that activate their subconscious imaginations. Not to mention, both characters had a history of mental health problems.
Although their subconscious endeavors are entertaining for sure, most people would fail to realize the reality. And, if it seems confusing enough already, trust me, I’ve only scratched the surface of Maniac.
Manifest
Montenegro Air Flight 828 had a turbulent ride, but landed safely, only for passengers to discover that five years had passed while they were in the air. The authorities had declared the plane “missing” and everyone onboard as “presumed dead”. While the passengers have a hard time accepting the new reality, some of them start their hunt to find out what exactly happened on flight 828.
Bonus Suggestion: The Perfection
Charlotte, a talented cellist had to take a break to take care of her dying mother. Years later, she hunts down her mentor to make a fresh start. Although, she did find her mentor, another aspiring cellist – Lizzie. Both developed an instant bond and planned a trip to Shanghai. And on this trip, everything starts to go astray.
For a few moments before the climax, the movie rewinds (the story plays back in reverse) with some additional context. Nonetheless, to understand what happens, give your undivided attention to this movie when Charlotte and Lizzie hop on the bus.
